Hearing loss was once considered a normal part of aging, but that's no longer the case. Not only are there ways to protect ears from noise induced hearing loss, studies indicate that changes in diet can protect hearing longterm. In fact, a recent study indicates consumption of fish twice a week by women can reduce the risk of hearing loss.
The consumption of fish twice a week by women was shown to reduce the risk of hearing loss. It is suspected that foods rich in omega 3, a polyunsaturated fat, are what's behind this decrease. According to the American Heart Association, "Polyunsaturated fats are simply fat molecules that have more than one unsaturated carbon bond in the molecule, this is also called a double bond. Oils that contain polyunsaturated fats are typically liquid at room temperature but start to turn solid when chilled. Olive oil is an example of a type of oil that contains polyunsaturated fats." These polyunsaturated fats are good for our health and can help prevent hard disease.
The reason fish are so beneficial for hearing is that they have longer chains of polyunsaturated fats. In the study the diets of 65,000 women were monitored for twenty years. The study, reported on by Science Daily, found, "In comparison with women who rarely consumed fish, women who consumed two or more servings of fish per week had a 20 percent lower risk of hearing loss." This benefit seems to occur no matter what type of fish is consumed.
Not only is fish and omega 3 fatty acids shown to help protect hearing, other studies have indicated exercising at least twice a week has benefits hearing preservation.
