The Success of Hearing Aids

Couple hugging. Hearing aids improve relationship and love lives.

A recent study led by Hear the World titled Hearing is Living has provided startling evidence that hearing aid use improves relationships and can even benefit a person's love life. According to the study, "70 percent of all respondents who have hearing aids confirm that their relationship has improved since they’ve been wearing a hearing aid. Over a third (36%) of respondents even report a more fulfilled love life since their hearing has improved." Cleone Mcaplin of Boston, Massachusetts can certainly attest to how hearing aids can help a relationship.

Today, People Hearing Better is happy to share a story from a member of our community. Below Cleone Mcaplin tells us how hearing instruments have benefitted her life and her marriage.

I had always been afraid of losing one of my senses. It sounds silly, but I would often think to myself if I were to lose a sense which one could I live without. I love all my senses as much as I love my life, so the idea of having to live without one scared me, well, senseless. Little did I know that I would wake up one morning and discover my acute sense of hearing was gone.

One Thursday morning, I awoke from sleep and had little desire to get up. I stayed in my bed for about 10 minutes. When I finally made it to the kitchen, my husband was there looking confused and disappointed. He started to speak to me, telling me he'd been calling me. That's when I realized his voice sounded muffled.

He had been calling my name, but I hadn't been able to hear him.

This was it, I thought, I had lost my hearing and everything would be different, even the long relationship with my husband. I didn't know what to do, but after I calmed down, I realized the first thing to do was to see someone. I made an appointment with an audiologist and found a friend who could drive me over right away.

As soon as I saw the doctor, I felt better. She explained my condition and I started the process of bettering my hearing loss. Eventually, she spoke to me about hearing aids. The choice was an easy one, because I knew that without them I wouldn't be able to hear what I loved in my life--like my husband's voice. After I was fitted for the hearing aids, I had to wait to receive them. I was very anxious for them to arrive.

When the hearing aids arrived, my doctor put them in and turned them on. I couldn't believe they actually worked! I hurried home to tell my husband. As a test, he went into the other room and called my name. He began to call, "Cleone! Cleone!" I heard him just fine! I smiled, the grin was big because... I don't know if there is a word to describe how happy I was.

The next day I woke up and I could hear, feel, taste, see, and smell the world around me. I knew that all my senses were there and working properly. When I got up from bed, I could hear a noise as small as a pin dropping on the hard ground and a baby crying from the top floor of our apartment building. The loss I had feared had turned to hope. My relationship and my life seemed restored by a simple device that was put inside my ears. Now, I'll enjoy good hearing the rest of my life and am truly happy because of it.
